I took this photo on June 12, 2026, in Edgartown, Massachusetts. After a long walk from the parking lot, I found a spot where Black Skimmers seemed to be flying by somewhat regularly, about two-to-three times per hour. I stood in place for about ninety minutes waiting for an opportunity and then saw this Skimmer flying towards me parallel to the shoreline. That gave me more time than usual to get set up for an action shot and I was just lucky that the Skimmer grabbed a fish out of the water while I was focussed on it. For those not familiar with Black Skimmers, the "original" shows a more typical view of their skimming-feeding technique. I took the "original" a few weeks earlier.
I took the photo with my Sony Alpha 1, Mark II, with a 300 mm prime lens and 2x extender for a focal length of 600 mm. Settings were 1/1,600 s, f/11, and ISO of 1250.

Richard, great action image at peak. Skimmer's photography is very challenging since they fly very fast. The main image is a winner, and of course the original as well. Both very sharp and showing their behaviour, however; if available I would have included the whole wings in the original. The one with the fish the crop I think is appropriate.   Posted: 07/02/2026 11:58:48

Wow Richard! Great shot! And interesting that we both field Black Skimmers this month - mine (not as excellent as yours) is in Bird Group 91.
I've never seen them catch a fish so clearly and your image exudes action. Yes, not seeing all the wings seems fine for such a high drama shot. So sharp - very high speed froze mor of the water flying everywhere. Well done!   Posted: 07/09/2026 14:23:37

Cool, I just found out that you, Bruce and Maria are in that group as well. I know Jerry very well. He is/was the president of one Camera Club I used to belong many years ago.   Posted: 07/10/2026 13:53:15

I learn much from Jerry and that group - especially as I'm tending to do more bird photography since I first joined 72 in 2018.   Posted: 07/10/2026 15:24:13
