About the Image(s)
We visited the Falklands in February for our 2nd time (last was 2023) and nearly didn’t as the off-shore wind was right on the borderline of being OK for the small tender boats. Volunteer Point rarely disappoints. The Kings colony is growing well, now reaching 4,000 and is/was free of the dreaded Avian Flu. The Gentoo colony - much smaller isn’t growing and has been affected (not seriously) by the flu and were roped off. We went via a boot-bath.
I was mostly looking for babies, but I also kept my eye roving for wider scenes with much orange. This ‘chap’ caught my eye and grabbed a shot while he reached tall - perhaps he was on Point Duty.
Settings using my Olympus gear at 400mm (so 800FF) 1/1,000 f6.3 ISO 200.
PP in Lightroom using masks only, including using one as a sort of vignette with negative Clarity to push the attention to the main subject. I cropped down to a point that left a ring of inward facing beaks.

What a lovely image of these king penguins. You've managed the selective focus very well, drawing attention to the penguin that is lifting its head, while the others remain in a more submissive pose.
The colours are fantastic, and your crop really emphasizes their characteristics.   Posted: 04/12/2026 18:57:32
