About the Image(s)

I took this photo on November 10, 2025, during a recent trip to Costa Rica, with my Sony Alpha 1 and 300 mm prime lens. The settings were 1/4000 s, f/2.8 and ISO 1600.

Richard, Costa Rica is a bird's photographers paradise. A lot of hummingbirds varieties. The image is sharp with frozen wings (1/4000 sec). Sometimes there is debate as whether or not a slight wing blur has to show to denote the real fast flapping of the wings to be able to hover. The colors are well treated and the image is sharp with a non distracting background. I believe there is too much empty space which takes away prevalence on the bird. This is my take about the crop.   Posted: 12/08/2025 00:01:26

Hey Richard - I love Costa Rica (been there 4 times!), and the hummers are the best. Your image is spot on; great colors, sharp as a tack, and nice stop on the wings. Isaac's crop works well here.   Posted: 12/08/2025 03:04:30

I hope you enjoyed your trip to C R - I can't match Karon's 4 visits, we've been three times for a fortnight each and wish to return!

Your Rufous has the perfect subdued background and is perfectly presented in terms of lighting and sharpness. I agree with Isaac re a tighter crop, although would prefer the bird to be just a little further to the left, lo9king in to the centre. I hope we see more hummers from you!   Posted: 12/12/2025 18:19:18

Hi Richard - Unlike you and the others others, I haven't made my way to Costa Rica yet for one reason or another. Your image of this hummingbird makes me even more determined to get there sooner than later. The colors of your image are warm and pleasing to the eyes, and your timing was perfect. Yes, I agree with the comments that a tighter crop would be an enhancement.   Posted: 12/14/2025 20:48:09
