About the Image(s)

I often see pelicans and cormorants congregate in the winter in a park close to my home. It was late-morning when I took some shots of these shore birds in December and I wasn’t too pleased with the outcomes, particularly the lighting. However, this particular one appealed to me because I really liked the warm interaction between this one pelican and the double crested cormorant standing right next to it. The cormorant seemed to have said something that pleased the pelican. The contrast in their color and size I also found striking. So I decided to salvage the image and give it a shot in Photoshop. First thing I did was to get rid of the two other cormorants. I then used ACR to work on the cormorant first and adjusted the exposure, contrast, highlights and the shadow. I also increased the vibrance. I understand that juvenile double crested cormorants tend to be browner than black. Then I worked on the pelican also using ACR to make the same adjustments. Then I brought down the highlights in the background and adjusted its color also in ACR. I used the remove tool to eliminate a lot of the other distractions, e.g., the “poop” on the rock. Finally, I used Generative Expand to increase the left side of the image to recover what was lost when I cropped the two other cormorants and added just a tad on the top of the image. I’m glad I didn’t delete the image.

I shut this with my Sony A7III and the settings were f6.3, 1/400 s, ISO 200, @ 204 mm.

As always, I’d appreciate any comments and/or suggestions.

Maria - Your photo captures a great moment of intimacy between members of two different species - very interesting. I'm not a Photoshop guy so can't really comment on your editing process. But, comparing the original to the final, looks like you did a great job bringing out the colors and adding the right emphasis. But in the final, there is a vertical strip near the left edge (approximately 1/4 the width of the full photo) that looks a little off (smudgy?) from the rest. I don't see anything comparable in the original and wonder if that strip was somehow a result of the editing process.   Posted: 07/13/2025 15:49:59

Thank you for you kind comments, Richard. Yes, that smudge must have occurred during PP. Will keep this in mind on future PP.   Posted: 07/14/2025 19:38:43

Hi Maria,
Your image made me feel how much I miss Australia, where I lived for twelve years. I really enjoyed visiting my favourite spot, Long Reef, to photograph pelicans and cormorants that were local to the area.

I love the moment of interaction you've captured, and I also appreciate how you've enhanced the subtle colours in the image. The framing works very well, and the level of detail and clarity beautifully complement the scene.

Hello, Maria,
I'm pleased that my image of the cormorant and the pelican evoked some great memories of the time you spent in Australia, specifically Long Reef. Thank you for your feedback on my PP work since this remains a growth area in my photography journey.

Maria, another example of coexistence. They look as though they are having a conversation. The birds are sharp and the background is non distracting. Good selection for a crop.   Posted: 07/15/2025 16:50:47

Maria - your hard work in PP has certainly paid off here. Skilfully done!

The end result is of an endearing image with much detail and cleanly presented. The open mouth of the young Cormorant looking up to its larger cousin is delightful.

I could not have imagined that end result from looking at the raw file! Well done.   Posted: 07/21/2025 17:18:58
