Salmon Feast by Dr Isaac Vaisman, APSA, PPSA

July 2025 - Salmon Feast

About the Image(s)

Salmon Feast is a follow up to Bruce's last month image. Was created at The Katmai National Park Preserve with the largest protected Brown Bears population, located at the Kodiak Island in Alaska. There was so much sockeye salmon available that the bears were busy accumulating calories before going into hibernation.

Used a Nikon Z6 ii with the S zoom lens 70-200 mm f/2.8 + 2xZ TC for a total of 400 mm and with these settings: ISO 1100, f/5.6 and 1/400 sec. The image was PP in LightRoom and cropped.

Isaac - This is a stunning image! The fur, the claws, the color - everything works. The only thing I could imagine doing differently is perhaps cropping a little tighter on the right side. Are there small insects buzzing around the bear's head?   Posted: 07/02/2025 02:01:34

Yes Richard, those are bugs buzzing over and around the bear's head. I do not agree with the crop.   Posted: 07/04/2025 17:08:21

Thanks Isaac. If you would say a few words about how you decided to set the right edge of the crop, or why where you've placed it is the right place, I'd appreciate the opportunity to learn from your comments.   Posted: 07/07/2025 02:12:58

The bear is looking that way and you have to give space to try to show what is he looking at. Also, if you crop the right side, the bear would be centered in the frame which is not ideal.   Posted: 07/09/2025 00:24:15

Hi Isaac,

Apologies for contacting you this way, but I'm having trouble sending my image for this month.

I've tried twice, and both times I received an email stating that the recipient's email system rejected the connection from my email server. I'm not sure what happened, as I followed the same steps as in previous months.

I would really appreciate it if you could let me know how to proceed.

Maria, I had the same problem and have had to send my posts to

Isaac, Nothing can be done to improve this fine image. I consider soccer and grizzlies my specialties and really appreciate how good this one is. Bruce   Posted: 07/09/2025 15:49:39

This is a fantastic image Isaac! I love the little flies around his head too. He is very sharp and realistic.   Posted: 07/10/2025 16:40:14

Hi Isaac,
This is a fantastic moment you've captured, full of detail and clarity, made even more powerful by the eye contact with the viewer.

The bear stands out beautifully against the warm greens in the background, and the details in the fur, fish, and claws all come together to create a truly beautiful image.

Hi Isaac - your image of this brown bear that looks very content while feasting on salmon is spectacular. All the sharp details; his nose and nostrils, his soulful eyes, the water droplets around his mouth, the tiny bugs over and around his head, the remains of the salmon and his sharp claws; all these give life and energy to your powerful image.

Isaac - great, great capture! I love the little details, and how the bear seems to be contemplating... something. Sharp with the perfect background. #1 in my book.   Posted: 07/18/2025 01:13:11

Well done Isaac, another great bear image!

This tight portrait shows so much detail with lovely lighting and sympathetic out of focus background. All excellent!   Posted: 07/21/2025 17:23:33
