About the Image(s)

For this month’s image, I’ve chosen a photo of a Calopteryx virgo, commonly known as the Little Devil horsefly. I took this shot last week at a small creek, which is usually their preferred habitat. I was delighted to discover that they’re already around, as the cold and rainy weather had delayed their arrival.

In editing I select the subject and invert the mask to darken the background in LR

Maria - This is a gorgeous image! I love what you did with the post processing. I never would have thought to darken the background so much, but it looks terrific! I'll have to keep that technique in mind for myself going forward. The coloring of the horsefly is exquisite! It's an image that makes me want to continue staring and, as I do, more details (like the spikes on the legs and the reflections on the eye) keep emerging. Fantastic image!   Posted: 05/02/2025 19:02:10

Maria, in Venezuela they are called "caballitos del Diablo". I personally prefer the original with the environmental colors. The Dragonfly is indeed sharp and with beautiful colors.   Posted: 05/03/2025 14:43:41

Maria - absolutely stunning image! Perfect in every way. I love what you did in post (I do this often - sometimes also softening the background a bit more if needed). This looks contest-worthy to me. Great job!   Posted: 05/08/2025 20:24:05

Maria, your post production work is absolutely outstanding. I love the appealing contrast between the dark background and the colorful and elegant dragonfly.   Posted: 05/12/2025 18:42:01
