December 2024 - My Girl

About the Image(s)

Take on Whiskey Mountain Wyoming. Whiskey Mountain is a refuge for bighorn sheep with ideal conditions for the bighorns. At 9,000 feet high the wind keeps the snow off the grass because of the 40 MPH winds. The -20F temps are common but no problem for them. I was in big trouble when the battery my brand new rental vehicle went dead just after sunset and the nearest help was 20 miles away when a BBC photographer came up the ridge and was able to give me a cable jump to get it started. I was not prepared for the temperature and wind and would have likely not made it through the night.

Bruce, lucky you that a fellow photographer was around. I guess that is one of the risks of being alone in distant lands. Interesting image showing the older bighorn sheep pushing away the younger (shorter horns) and protecting his girl. Image is sharp and at peak of action. Some purists ND judges may underscore the image because of the overlapping of the horns.   Posted: 12/04/2024 16:28:29

Bruce - Gosh I'm glad the good-old BBC came to your rescue!

The interlocking horns and their expressions make this a very interesting shot, very sharp and well presented. Lovely.   Posted: 12/15/2024 18:20:54

Hi Bruce,

Luckily, the other photographer was able to help you.

This is a wonderful image of the group of bighorn sheep in their natural environment. It effectively captures the action between the two males while the female appears indifferent. The image also benefits from strong visual eye contact, sharp details, and good separation from the background, which enhances its overall presentation.   Posted: 12/15/2024 19:18:21

Thank you, Bruce, for sharing the story behind your image of this trio of bighorn sheep. Mentioning the elevation and the winds then looking these creatures and getting a strong sense of their body language is a great experience for me as a viewer. Very impressive image.   Posted: 12/17/2024 19:22:03
