July 2024 - Ladies of Samir

About the Image(s)

We were just starting to shoot at the Saumur castle in the Loire Valley of France when we saw these two ladies walk into our scene. We started to take pictures when a man jumped into our frame. He was a professional photographer and these were his models. We were getting a free photo setup. He decided we were amature and just shouted at us to tell us we were very lucky. We shouted back in agreement and took our pictures. Canon 7D with 15-85 Canon lens at ISO 200, 55mm, f/16, 1/200 sec. Note: NO POST PROCESSING INFORMATION provided.

How fortuitous that the ladies happened to walk in to the perfect spot in the composition. They go well with the bridge and old buildings in the background and it is a lively image with excellent contrast and tonal range. What I think makes it so engaging is that the ladies are not looking at the camera and are just going about their task. Right place right time.   Posted: 07/19/2024 08:12:08

Wonderful image, Stan. I like everything about even it being a monochrome. However, for me, it begs artistic color and close out the cars on the bridge in then the time in place, title and terrific composition will resonant a lot of beauty that seems a little bit missing in the black and white method.   Posted: 07/19/2024 17:59:09

An outstanding image that can take you back to the thirties with the lady's attire. They definitely add to the image!   Posted: 07/20/2024 17:19:35

What a fortunate opportunity you came across here. The image tells a vivid story about place and a simpler time. It could be a transition scene in the movie. The dark bushes behind the women provide good contrast with the women's white dresses. The light tone of the stonework on the buildings and bridge add a brighter layer behind the dark bushes which adds depth. Well done.   Posted: 07/22/2024 00:25:37

Agreed! An A1 picture. Even the parasols are against a dark background to make their shape stand out. I once took photos of a model with a parasol and let the shadow of the lace land on the models face, which we see here. Alas most others didn't like it, but I did, and I like it here!

I think I'd clone out the cars on the bridge, but it's nit-picking, I love this picture.   Posted: 07/25/2024 19:40:45
