Storm Surge by Chris Prior

October 2025 - Storm Surge

About the Image(s)

Canon 6D with Canon 24-70mm f4 lens @24mm 1/400sec f16 ISO 400

The foam from a storm surge was thick on the beach so positioned the camera low to get lots of it in the shot. It was an overcast and gloomy afternoon. Opened in camera RAW where I increased exposure one third of a stop, increased contrast and highlights slightly and decreased shadows slightly; then lots of localized dodging and burning. Converted to mono which was done by creating a new fill adjustment layer and selecting SOLID COLOR (black) and COLOR blending mode on 100% opacity.

Fascinating! A dramatic picture. At first I thought this picture had been spoiled by the lack of sharpness in the foreground, but after closer inspection I think it's just the texture of the foam as the water on the front right is sharper. I wonder if there's a bit too much foam in the picture? Perhaps a crop at the bottom would give more prominence to the pier? Also lightening the pier a little? - it has all but disappeared on the right.   Posted: 10/08/2025 10:03:25
