Canon 6D with Canon 70-200mm f4 lens @200mm 1/2000sec f8 ISO 400. A random holiday snapshot of a yacht race about to start in the Bay of Naples with the cliffs of Sorrento in the background. There was nothing wrong with the colour version but I thought the image had good contrast for a mono conversion. Opened in camera RAW where I toned down highlights and whites a little so the sails would hold detail. Imported to Photoshop where I converted to mono by creating a new fill adjustment layer and selecting SOLID COLOR (black) and COLOR blending mode on 100% opacity. Finally boosted contrast using curves on a separate curves adjustment layer.

The composition of horizontal bands of successively reduced contrast starting from the water to the hills to the sky is very effective. The crisp white sails in a linear formation against the water command attention. Nicely done. Posted: 05/12/2025 21:55:58
