Michigan Shore Scene by Jerry Snyder

March 2025 - Michigan Shore Scene

About the Image(s)

My monochrome image for March titled Michigan Shore Scene is attached. The image was made in December along the Lake Michigan Shoreline. The wet rocks along the shoreline gleamed with specular highlights. My objective was to show a long stretch of shoreline with a narrow band of acceptable sharp focus and to use the gradient of focus in front and back of this band to give a sense of depth. The image was taken into Lightroom, cropped, and straightened. The sky was darkened and a person walking a dog in the far distance was removed. Sharpening was applied to the narrow bank of focus. The exposure settings were 1/250 sec, f/20, and ISO 100 on a Sony a6000 set at 50mm.

Noting your objective I think you have successfully portrayed a sense of depth as although the top section is out of focus I am still led to the waves which are an integral part of the overall story. You have picked a good area to focus on as that section has the largest boulders and appears to be the most interesting section. I would be interested to see the waves/ sky area a little brighter.   Posted: 03/16/2025 19:52:59

I like the specular highlights of the stones. You could almost crop off the sky, as the major interest for me is the rocks.   Posted: 03/19/2025 16:23:45

Couldn't tell if they were rocks or bubbles, but like the specualar highlights and composition. Increased the gamma overall to reveal the rocks, but that may not be your intent.   Posted: 03/20/2025 05:06:17

I consider you very creative to pre-visualize this image. I like that the foreground is in focus and that it becomes softer in the distance. I suspect your f-stop used and lens focal length were both considerations to get this result. I really like that you had star bursts on rocks from the very close to a significantt distance into the image. I personaly like that the sky is at the top of the frame. I like seeing the sky and I think the image benefits from the lighter tones of both the waves and the sky.   Posted: 03/31/2025 02:14:58
