About the Image(s)

This photo was taken in the cathedral at Trondheim, Norway. The organ is a magnificent instrument with the show pipes being arranged in a curve. Computer coupled to two other organs in the building, it is the largest organ in Norway and Sweden. Alas, I did not hear it playing.

OM Systems OM-1, Panasonic Leica 25mm lens, 1/60 sec, f1.4, ISO 2000, edited in Affinity 2

The light brings me to the organ pipes and only the organ pipes. It appears that the light is coming from high windows on the right. But this doesn't explain all of the bright areas. This looks like a candidate for exposure bracketing. What processing steps did you use?

Nice composition. I like how the light focuses on most of your subject but I agree with Jerry. I would increase the gamma of the lower quarter of the image overall, either by dodging the mids or masking that area and adjusting mids that way.   Posted: 03/15/2025 21:08:17

Interesting comments, thanks. It was pretty dim in there as you can see from the setting, and I didn't have a tripod with me, so I didn't try HDR here. In hindsight, it might have been worth it, as the ISO was high and so the sensor latitude will have been fairly low. However I've revisited the file and increased the exposure in the bottom third. Does this help?

I'm afraid I don't know how to alter the gamma on part of the image using Affinity - its help system didn't help much with this. Dodging mid-brightness pixels? How do you do that?

I agree generally with above comments. I like the reworked image much better as you have brought out better shadow detail and the whole thing looks more natural. Even so I like the range of tones and lines in the structural elements, pipes and stained glass and how the lighting has revealed plenty of detail there.   Posted: 03/16/2025 19:38:23

Here's my fix. I simply used the PS Dodge tool set at "Shadows" with 25% opacity. Might be al little too flat in the contrast. And actually, whatever you did looks better!

Anyway, sorry Stuart. I shouldn't assume everyone is using Photoshop to edit. I've never heard of some of the editing software being used, except for Nik products.   Posted: 03/19/2025 02:51:57

I personally feel there is enough detail in the organ pipes and most of the image. I wouold probably like to see the tones brought down on some of the picture elments near the top of the image. They don't look "blown out" so I think that is possible with some selecive processing.   Posted: 03/31/2025 00:37:44
