Looking Up by Don York

January 2025 - Looking Up

About the Image(s)

My entry is entitled "Looking Up" and was taken during a hike in the woods at Shaw Nature Reserve near St Louis. Shot was taken with my Sony Alpha 7 M11 at f8, 1/125 sec and ISO 100. Nothing special in post processing.

Very high key and so it all becomes about the composition which works well as the trunks form a strong leading line all radiating to that top left intersecting third area. The semi silhouette effect works for the subject matter and the image is quite mesmerizing.   Posted: 01/16/2025 04:23:00

Certainly this isn't the first time this type of image has been taken, but the high contrast, lack of leaves and good composition make it one of the most impactful such pictures that I've seen. Well done! No suggestions.

I agree, there are unique things about this compoistion of a common subject. I like that there are not a lot of leaves but there are some. The branches make a pattern of a lot of lines. I like the way you positioned it so the primary lines point to a place 1/3 in from the left and 1/3 down from the top. Often these images end up cenered left to right. This is better.   Posted: 01/17/2025 00:33:16

I like the dark, unsharp forms of the trees.   Posted: 01/18/2025 14:47:43
