About the Image(s)

I was sailing in the Hebrides recently, and we passed Fingal’s Cave. The hexagonal columnar basalt rock formations are dramatic. But everyone takes a photo of the cave as they pass the island, and I wanted something different. I filled the frame with the cave and its surrounds, and then processed. Initially I couldn’t get the stark outlines I wanted, so played with posterization and levels adjustments. I think the results are interesting. Which do you prefer?

Main image: PA012027 posterise 4 50%. This has 4 posterisation levels, with 50% opacity, on top of the “straight” mono.

Others are “original” images:
PA012027 mono ??“ a “straight” mono conversion
PA012027 posterise 4 ??“ with 4 posterisation levels and 100% opacity
PA012027 levels adjusted - with no posterization, but both white and black levels changed, to 86% and 14% respectively.

OM Systems OM-1, Olympus 40-150mm pro lens at 150mm, 1/500 sec, f4.5, ISO 1000, processed in Affinity 2

Best wishes, and Happy Christmas to all!

I like original 3 as it looks more natural (is that without posterisation?). Nonetheless the image has a lot of impact courtesy of those repetitive shapes and textures. I like how you not only provide the 3 distinct horizontal bands in the composition but 3 vertical bands of light/dark/light as well. The darker of those 3 vertical bands acts as a leading line to showcase the smaller chunks at the bottom.   Posted: 12/06/2024 09:56:14

I like Number 3 Original. It has the most interesting texture and tonal truth. The others seem, to my eye, to have more muddy elements within the image.   Posted: 12/11/2024 22:20:03
