About the Image(s)

With Halloween just around the corner in the US, I thought this image would be perfect. We recently had a long weekend getaway to Red River Gorge in Kentucky. We stayed in a old farmhouse Airbnb. I noticed this door outside that led to the basement beneath the house. It reminded me of those doors you see in horror movies.

I processed the image using DXO PureRaw. I imported the image into LrC, where I used masking to adjust the image. Finally, I converted the image to B&W using LrC. I processed this image darker and more contrasty than I would have normally done, aiming to create a scary effect.

Where is Mike Myers when you need him?

Nice choice for this season. My only suggestion is to lower the exposure some to add to the horror

Hi, Chris, I do like this image, and it is spooky. I see so much detail in your color image that seems to be lost in the black and white conversion -- above the doorknob especially. I wonder if playing around with contrast would help, or maybe drop some of the highlights might make those details stand out more. I agree with Emil's suggestion also. Happy Halloween !   Posted: 10/06/2026 16:28:36

Chris -beautiful image to convey the spirit of Halloween. I like the original image very much - the combination of the saturated colors and the texture in the rust, flaking paint, rotting wood etc bring out all the details including the rope. Converting to B&W removes all the affects of the various colors ( in this case I believe colors are not a distraction but a key part )

In the B&W conversion you dealt very well with the remaining the textures and contrast but lost some details ( the rope is less prominent and hopefully you can bring it back ).

Cheers

Chris, I love your creativity and your choice of an image appropriate for Halloween. Excellent!

The challenge of making it even spookier appealed to me. So, with that in mind, I played with it a bit... even adding a nearly invisible "Do Not" scratch on the door. What do you think?
