Last March, I took some time to enjoy street photography while walking around San Francisco. I came across a gentleman playing an instrument on the street. He was set up in front of a church with a wrought iron fence and trees, providing him with a beautiful backdrop. I was captivated by his music and the way he positioned himself away from the hustle and bustle of the area.
I processed the image in LrC, including the conversion to monochrome. The original image was captured using the HEIC format on the iPhone. I had to spend time in Photoshop cleaning up the various artifacts created by the HEIC format. Lesson learned to always use DNG format on the iPhone when taking images that are not snapshots.

I like your viewpoint here. Street photography in San Francisco has to be a treat 24/7.
I made a small tweek using Lightroom to fade the far frame crowd. I selected the musician, inverted the mask and lowered the exposure a bit and subtracted that mask around his feet to keep it open.
I notice he has a case for tips, hopefully he had a good day

Thanks for the feedback on the image. I'll have to play with darken or minimize the the people in the upper left of the image. Haven't done a lot of street photography, San Francisco can be bit overwhelming with all the interesting scenes. Posted: 08/25/2026 00:51:37
Chris, I agree with Emil (as usual)... It's an excellent viewpoint, and your image definitely tells a story (though perhaps a sad one). Street musicians are intriguing and often difficult to photograph. Well done.
I played with your photograph a bit to see if I could separate the musician even more than Emil managed. Not sure I succeeded, but here it is.

Hello Chris, I'm new to this group and also love street photography.
I would love to see a larger version of this picture -- even when I clicked on your original, it was too small to see if the focus was sharp. In Photoshop, your original is only 2 inches by 3 inches, hard to edit.
I'd love to see the man without the stuff beyond his chin and face - it distracts me and -again - I can't tell if this is in focus. I'd love to see the original in aa larger size.

Chris, great shot which tells a lot. I agree with Emil and Pete about the idea to darken the bystanders. I probably would in addition to their treatments also mask the white skirt of the person at the left and darken it in addition. Br, A Posted: 08/12/2026 13:45:06
Chris - I believe that the image has potential however as Donna mentioned it is difficult to view it properly because of the small size.
Perhaps Pete can provide some info on file sizes for the submissions.

Michael, Thanks for your feedback. I think my predefined export for PSA images might be the culprit. For some reason, I could not get the image down to below 1MB. I went back and updated the settings. See if this is better. Posted: 08/25/2026 00:47:42
Chris - this is better . I usually save my exports for this project at 72PPI, 1080pixels on the large side and quality of 6 - this generally seems to fit the 1MB file size.
I like your edit - the musician is on a leading line and suits the rule of thirds well. It's unfortunate the white pavement just behind his nose intrudes into his face and almost looks like part of his features. I cloned out some of it so his features are more distinct.

Thank you for sharing this lovely edition of street photography. I enjoy street photgraphy a lot, as you never know what is waiting for us to shoot or capture.
This uncertainity and mystery keep me going always. Next one will be a better one.. I beleive every one is familiar with this feeling while doing streets shooting.
You did a wonderful job managing this current edition. Nothing more to add here. I do like, the versions from Pete and Emil too.
