About the Image(s)

My family visited Japan in May and got to visit a number of Japanese temples. This image is from the Kiyomizu-dera Temple looking toward Kyoto. I like how the temple structure frames Kyoto and the mountains beyond. During this trip, I only took my Canon RF 35mm lens, which made it an interesting challenge to photograph the various structures.

I processed the image in Lightroom Classic. Even though the original image looks too dark, I made sure to avoid clipping the blacks and the highlights when I captured the image. I used LrC to raise the exposure and used masks to fine-tune each area of the image, which is the second color image I attached to give you a better view of details. I then converted the image to B&W in Nik Silver Efex 9.

I believe seeing the culture of Japan would be such treat for you and your family. Such a rich heritage.

The Temple frames the city of Kyoto very nicely in your shot. In your rendering, the dark interior brings your eye to the city automatically.

Nicely done. Brings back memories of my family trip there long ago.
I admire you taking only one lens. I used to shoot with a 35mm a lot, but only because I did not have a 28mm.   Posted: 07/12/2026 05:50:45

Chris, It's wonderful and a fantastic reminder of your trip. The frame provided by the structure is perfect. It highlights the city. Beautifully done!

I took the liberty of playing with your photograph. I wanted to see how it would look with the structure being even darker. What do you think?
