About the Image(s)

I sometimes have pictures that I like, although I cannot explain why, because they are profane. This month's picture from the former harbour of my hometown, Basel, falls in this category. I took the picture in a reflex, because I liked the yellow circles ??“ which was however not very meaningful as I only do bw.

Converted in LR to bw and then increased the dynamics, plus lighted up the water at the top with a linear gradient, and liked it as well in black and white.

I struggled with the composition and for reasons unknown to me liked the one better where the circles are not centered: your views?

Good that Pete has mixed up the pictures because after sending it, I started to like the picture better, where the circles are centred (which is now presented as the final version)   Posted: 04/03/2026 12:56:55

Adrian - I also tend to photograph ladders, safety equipment and moorings located on docks ( the last time was Feb 2, 2026 ) - I am usually drawn by the fact that they are painted yellow which contrasts with the blue of the water.

Your processing also brings out the minimalist aspect of the resulting composition. And I agree that basing the crop on the center bolt on the plate ( and center of the ring ) being exactly in the middle gives a balanced feeling.

One comment is based on the fact that the last shadow on the right corner pulls the eye out and away from the image. I took the liberty of attempting a different crop.

Regards
Mike

thanks Mike for sharing your /our common interests. My hometown Basel used to be an important harbour, where the goods shipped from Rotterdam down the Rhine were distributed further inland. For reason unknown to me the importance has dropped significantly in the past decades and substantial areas are now open to alternative uses, but they kept the old objects here and there as artefacts which makes them nice objects to photograph.
Take care and all the best. A   Posted: 04/06/2026 08:02:28

Adrian

Your picks up very interesting objects to photograph and this month is a different look at your Basel home.

Well done

What is 161?

many thanks Emil - the 161 is painted on the top left corner on the floor. I have no clue what it means but felt it gave a nice title to the picture :-)

I am finding it difficult to make suggestions on this image. The current version kind of "grows on me." Nonetheless, I played with it a bit to modify the cropping and texture of the rings. It was fun to play with, but frankly, I'm not very happy with what I came up with.

Thanks Pete for giving it a try: as I said: it is not a very sophisticated picture which I for reasons unknown to myself started to like. Hence there is probably not a lot to play around with.   Posted: 04/12/2026 12:18:22

I love shooting this type of image too and may not have seen it in person but i think the real shot is Pete's crop but with all of the shadow's inside the frame. Since the original doesn't include the entirety of all three shadow's one can't adjust it now. One other point, the horizontal line created by the edge of the dock doesn't add to the image, another reason i like Pets' crop of it. Mark   Posted: 04/13/2026 19:51:02

Adrian, I like the image you captured. I also find the small common objects that often over looked make for the interesting images. The repetition of the three rings with a little difference between them makes this a very interesting image to me. Just an opposing view to Mark's, I would have included more water in the image to give it context that is by the water which would give the viewer a since of what these rings are for.   Posted: 04/15/2026 11:52:18

Hi Adrian,
Greetings my friend.
An image of a mooring ring beside the dock. The conversion is good and it almost gives an abstract theme, if you could tighten the crop and discard the water portion of the image. However a creative one in this edition. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.
