This bridge connects Missouri with Illinois (Chouteau Island there) and is part of the great Route 66. I always wanted to take a few shots so I did this past Sept. It is now a pedestrian bridge. It is one mile long with a dog leg bend about mid-span of all things. There is a nice park on the Mo side.
Workflow: I used NIK Silver Efex for BW and a touch of Detail Extractor in Color Efex. I then went to LR Classic used the masking tools.
Camera: Olympus OM-1 MK2 with 12-100mm f4 lens at 30mm. 1/200 sec f8, ISO 200, 0 EV

Emil, I love how this pulls me into the image. The leading lines are amazing, and they're coupled with the interesting shadows along the walkway. VERY impressive.
I played with your photograph to see how it might look with different cropping and lighting. I've attached what I came up with (i.e., square format), but in the end I prefer your version.
