About the Image(s)

It is impressive to go to Arlington Cemetery and see the Honor Guards for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. These Sentinels must meet strict height requirements, pass an interview and trial period, and learn a vast amount of historical knowledge to perform their duties flawlessly. They walk the black mat with precise 21-step paces, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of the weather, which, in Washington, includes snowstorms, hail, and hurricanes.

I wanted to make the guard the clear focus of my image. Since he was somewhat “lost” in the surrounding foliage, I felt that B&W might provide a way to have him stand out.
My processing was primarily done in Camera Raw, with slight modifications made in Photoshop.

Your shot does justice to this great Honor Guard. He stands out and he should.

A reminder of the greatness of our country.

Thank you, Emil. Have you ever had the chance to watch the changing of the guards? The precision and the solemnity is extraordinary.
