About the Image(s)

I am just into the beginning stages of still life photography. It gives me a chance to shoot in bad weather, when I don’t feel like driving, but it is all about working with light to enhance my BW and color shots. To me the challenges are getting the light to create depth and shadows and creating an interesting scene. Many miles to go before I feel really comfortable ??“ right now it is shot and see what it looks like.

Workflow: I used NIK Silver Efex to convert to BW. I then went to LR Classic and used the masking tools.

Camera: Olympus E-M1 MKII, 12-100mm f4 at 38mm, 0.8 sec f8, 0 EV ISO 200

Emil, for a beginner, you're a fantastic still-life photographer. The lighting gives the depth that you were trying for. Excellent!

I found the balance of the image felt a bit "off" to me. I wanted to see more of the smoke and to move the candle closer to the right side. So, with that in mind, I played with your photograph in Photoshop and Camera Raw. I used generative fill to add a bit of room on the left and top. Then, I slightly modified the lighting in Camera Raw.

Many people don't approve of using generative fill since it's introducing AI-created portions to a photograph. I have mixed feelings about this tool. But there are times when I find it's a good way to explore photographic possibilities.   Posted: 02/10/2025 20:05:04

Hi Emil, I like the picture a lot: the fine tone make this to a real piece of fine art: very well done.

I had similar thoughts like Pete and like the way he changed the cropping.   Posted: 02/22/2025 11:22:09
