About the Image(s)
It was taken this summer in Arles in the south of France late in the afternoon from a rooftop terrace. With an Aperol Spritz in hand we waited for people walking down the street providing shadows that fitted the environment. I liked this picture best. I felt it reminded me of a picture of H Cartier-Bresson, but I haven’t found what I believed to recollect.
The picture was taken with the Hasselblad X2D and the XCD 65 mm with ISO 400 f 12 and 1/250 sec. I did some basic adaptions in Lightroom (Tone, Presence and Colour Mix) to increase contrast and dynamic.

Adrian, your images (especially this month and last month) have shown me the value of shadows. Your use of them is outstanding. I love how you cropped this photograph. The shadow seems to point to the woman, while the steps add context and a bit of softness because of their gentle curves. Amazing. I wish I could make some constructive suggestions, but there's nothing I would consider changing. Well done!   Posted: 01/03/2025 00:59:21

Adrian - Excellent advice on cultivating patience - have an Aperol Spritz at hand! Your B&W treatment is outstanding and indeed reminiscent of iconic photographers.
I am beginning to recognize your preference for a square crop - and I have as a project to do more square cropping in my images. My first reaction in viewing the image is that the woman's shadow has a key impact on the image ( that's where my eyes go first) . The first thought was where has the woman been? To get back to cropping - certainly cropping is a key aspect of composition . I attempted a portrait crop and the message seems to become where is the woman going. I also tried to clone out the fence on the top left hand corner to make the image more minimalist but then this would detract from a realism perspective. Well done   Posted: 01/13/2025 19:36:01

Many thanks Mike - I like your composition a lot, which gives the person more air to breathe.
My soul is split when it comes to format: I have a lot of sympathy for the idea to fit the format individually to the topic of the picture as eg. Fan Ho did quite often. On the other hand it facilitates the organization of the hanging of an exhibition extremely if all pictures have the same size. Last but not least i fell in love with the square format when using the 6x6 Medium Cameras and I appreciate the challenge it poses to composition. Hence I do only square format nowadays, although it might not always be the best choice.   Posted: 01/14/2025 14:55:15

Very classy BW image. The long shadow of your subject and the shadows on the stairs add a nice flair to your image.
Your original lends itself to any number of crops that work so well. Michael's rendition is an example. Totally different feel to the viewer.
Well done

This is a good image for BW conversion. I also like you color image, the lady is straight at the start of a leading line. For BW, I like Michael's crop to bring the subject further away. Because the person was quite a distance from your position, it appears more in focus when it is smaller.   Posted: 01/16/2025 04:48:13
