July 2024 - Playing Chess

About the Image(s)

Image created on a side street of La Havana - Cuba a few years ago. Walking through the old Havana Town we encounter these group of men playing chess and looking very serious. They did not mind our presence and of course allowed us to take pictures. Used a Nikon D750 with the Nikkor zoom lens 24-300 mm @ 27 mm and with these settings: ISO 500, f/2.8 and 1/250sec.
Image was PP in LightRoom and cropped.

This image is clear and the concentration on the part of the players along with the apparent indifference of the third person. It tells a story well and the background colours fits the story well as it is typical of many older areas I have seen in South America, and to some degree up here. I did try a mono edit in Silver Efex to see the effect and I think it does feature the three persons more.   Posted: 07/02/2024 14:19:57

Ed, I also did the B&W interpretation and forgot to upload, but yes it really adds interest to the image. I like the color version as well which shows the palette of colors of the delapidated and abandoned structures in Cuba since the revolution in 1959.   Posted: 07/02/2024 17:06:12

Isaac - Wonderfully captured and composed. Each person is interesting and the colors of their clothing are a good contrast to the browns, tans and reds. I prefer the color version. B   Posted: 07/12/2024 14:08:31

Isaac, I really like this image since you have managed to capture the expressions of these men who are each focused on their moment. I prefer the image in color since the cold colors of the men's clothing contrast with the warm rust color of the door, plus it highlights the writings in the background of the image.   Posted: 07/19/2024 11:35:07

Isaac--Another winning image! I love everything about this image: the body language, the writing on the wall behind the men, the way the three figures are arranged, the chessboard is very visable so the narrative is clearly presented (perhaps the third man is waiting for his turn to play the winner). I think the color version is excellent but I also really like the b/w version. Just an all-round fine photograph. Congratulations!   Posted: 07/20/2024 17:57:49
