December 2023 - Getting Excited

About the Image(s)

Xmas image; I was taking night images in Ladysmith on the Island of the Xmas lights in the evening using a tripod. There were few people on the street at various times. I had completed what I set up to do took the camera off the Tripod and was headin back to my vehicle when this family walked past rather quickly. The young boy seemed to be struck by something and stopped to point it out reslulting in the family stopping for a moment. I was able to catch a part of the moment before they moved on. ISO 3200, f5.6, 1/40sec hand held..I did crop out a moving car on the left side.
Wishing all a Merry Xmas and all the best in the New year.

Ed, a color image for a change. Yes, it looks like something got the attention of the kid and he is rushing that way. There is some motion in the image since you only used 1/40 sec, but goes with the story. To my eyes, the colors are very saturated. I tried to reduce the saturation and change the white balance, but the neon colors overpowers both, so I am going back to your basics, a B&W interpretation   Posted: 12/12/2023 17:14:31

I felt colour added to the Xmas sprit but I agree it is too saturated. Also the lighting with the multitude of coloured lights was a challange. I do like your BW version. I did a real fast edit in NIC analog only using the preset to tone it down, but even at that the lights do have an effect making this difficult.   Posted: 12/13/2023 08:35:19

Ed - You were quick on the spot for this capture! If I had not read your intro I would not have seen the little boy pointing. He blends into the image. Perhaps cropping at the left from the sign might add more focus the the boy's action without losing the holiday lights which help set the image's stage? B   Posted: 12/15/2023 09:36:01

I tried your idea, but cropped some from the top as well, and it does put more attention on the family and the boy. Thanks. Something to think of going forward   Posted: 12/15/2023 10:35:59

Hi Ed--I would definately crop much tighter, eliminating the parking signs for sure and probably also the big green blob on the left. The story is about the family, especially the little boy, but they're somewhat hard to see. I know you were shooting on the fly; you had a good instinct to show this Christmas moment   Posted: 12/18/2023 12:15:50

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you. I will crop a little bit from the left to take the bottle out. Also I will crop a little bit from the right too. I think the image would have been better without the Parking sign. Nice work   Posted: 12/21/2023 20:53:48

Ed, I agree with the others that a tighter crop and a b&w version simplifies the image and focuses on the family. Nice composition with a family of three (odds) and interesting composition including a male, female and small boy. It is a wintry scene and the lights add to the story of a special time of the year.
