Market Vendor by Bruce Goodman

September 2023 - Market Vendor

About the Image(s)

While visiting the market in Split, Croatia I was hopeful that I would find some interesting subjects to photograph. This woman was the only vendor in the market wearing older, traditional clothing so I took my time watching her. She spent a long time arranging the vegetables that were on her table to sell and then sat down to wait for customers. I especially liked her face and hands. It was mid-morning so the sun/shadows were harsh.

Photo taken June 2023. Sony A1. Tamron 28-200 mm; ISO 640; 1/400 sec; f5.6; 178mm

Bruce, this Lady's gaze seems lost in the distance, and the skin and nails of her hand show her age and hard work in the field. Her typical outfit for sure improves considerably the image. Interesting as how you selected your focus point, being the foreground and background blurred and non distracting. I just wonder if you should have left the vegetables in the front whiting the DOF. She is sharp.   Posted: 09/11/2023 12:22:55

Thank you Isaac. I debated about the veggies in the front and tried it without. I left them in to try to show that she was selling vegetables. If I were to submit this to a club contest do you think a judge would 'ding' the photo because of the blurry vegetables? Thx. B   Posted: 09/11/2023 13:27:35

Bruce, It depends on the mood of the moment... Perhaps it is OK as it is on second thought.   Posted: 09/12/2023 08:38:17

Her gaze makes me wondering what she is thinking about, what she as seen in her life. I like the blurred plants in front, it completes the frame.   Posted: 09/11/2023 20:50:58

Hi Bruce -- I love this portrait! This is a beautiful appreciation of a face that seems to contain generations of Croatian history. The vegetables visible around her give context. I really like that they are suggested rather than explicitly shown, which is lovely.   Posted: 09/18/2023 16:12:04

Bruce - lovely image and shows the beauty of aging gracefully. I like how her hands touch her face and the framing of the cowl around her head. I also like the unmanicured nails showing her background as a hard worker. I would leave the vegetables around in the foreground because its part of the environment and adds to the story. The red color noise throughout the image is an easy fix in using color denoise option.   Posted: 09/21/2023 06:02:22

A very good street portriat . I agree with Gloria in that it shows the beauty of aging gracefully. Her face really stands out. This image I beleive also lends itself to a good BW. I did one in Silver Efex and kept away from any harsh editing around her face, then removed a couple of distractions and did a slight crop on the right. You have a good image I enjoyed it as shown .   Posted: 09/21/2023 11:06:40
