Counter-Flow by Linda Mui

April 2026 - Counter-Flow

About the Image(s)

A candid street study captured in the heart of Center City, Philadelphia, directly in front of City Hall. I was drawn to the visual tension created by the subjects moving in opposing diagonal planes against the rigid geometry of the crosswalk and the background scaffolding. This "decisive moment" emphasizes the isolation of the main subject as he cuts against the natural flow of the urban environment.

Technical Details:
• Camera: Nikon D7000
• Settings: f/8.0 | 18 mm | ISO 320

There's a lot to digest here. At first glance it just seemed "busy," without a clear focal point. Then I realized you did this intentionally, which changed my perception altogether. It is visually cacophonous- not a bad thing when creating eye-catching imagery.
While processing the details, I noted that all of the ladies in the picture are wearing the same style of tops. Some kind of club? You were able to get the "hustle" of the moment, both coming at you and going away from you, as the walk sign is down to 3 ticks.
Bottom line, there's a lot going on here that held my attention for a long time. Great pic!   Posted: 04/08/2026 20:50:18

Stephen,
Thank you for such a thoughtful analysis! You hit the nail on the head-I was definitely going for that "cacophonous" hustle of the city. I'm so glad you noticed the ladies in the similar tops; it adds to that feeling of a "crowd" while the main subject cuts through. I appreciate you taking the time to digest all the details!   Posted: 04/11/2026 19:25:36

Linda, I love the juxtaposition of the man in the black shirt against the crowd of women all dressed in white. That contrast immediately anchors the image. The diagonal white street lines add another layer of visual complexity, guiding the eye through the frame. It feels as though every element was intentionally anticipated - from the dark background that highlights the subject's fair complexion to the interplay of black and white throughout the scene. I'm especially drawn to how the main subject is fully engaged, looking directly at you in the moment you captured him. My eye goes straight to him. Nice work and patience!   Posted: 04/09/2026 01:58:45

Kerry,
Thank you! I'm so pleased that the juxtaposition of the black shirt against the white tops worked for you. I spent quite a bit of time waiting for that specific "anchor" to walk into the frame. It's great to hear that the diagonal lines helped guide your eye exactly where I hoped they would. Thanks for the encouragement!   Posted: 04/11/2026 19:26:59

Linda, since I am late in the discussion I can't add much more of what has already being said. I actually think your image is having a focus point. The man in black shirt (or whatever color is it) moving in the opposite direction of all ladies with a clear top (but one that is also dark). Is almost a metaphor of our society that is more and more divided. I think this is really a great picture.

best

Linda - In addition to the interesting composition (not too busy for me), the expression on the man's face is priceless. He is proudly walking with his new purchase and probably wondering 'why is this woman taking my picture'?. The young women provide balance with him coming toward the viewer while they walk away. Since I basically live on a college campus I have become accustomed to seeing the women all dressed almost identically. So much for individuality. B   Posted: 04/14/2026 13:20:43

Linda, the fact that the man is going in the opposite direction than the crowd, makes this street image great. This proves once more that patience pays off.   Posted: 04/15/2026 14:20:17
