December 2024 - Birthday Girl

About the Image(s)

Birthday Girl was created many years ago while walking through the back pedestrian streets in Marselle France. There was this group of young women all wearing a crown and very cheerful. I asked what the occasion/celebration was, and they all pointe out to the birthday girl.
I used my first Digital Nikon D300 DX (crop sensor) with the DX zoom lens 18-200 mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 18 mm and these settings: ISO 200, f/8 and 1/250 sec. The image was PP in LightRoom and cropped.

I think this image stands as is, and that is not only my opinion, my wife who belongs to another group had a look while I was looking at it and she said that picture does not need any improvement. I did get a kick out of the one girl on the left who is ignoring the group and engaged with someone else via her cell phone.   Posted: 12/04/2024 22:27:10

I like the cheerfulness of this photo. They had a good time and your photo reflects it very well. I would tone down the highlights as Birthday Girl stood in the shadow part, emphasising her important role in this day's celebration. It will also create a better sense of depth in the photo.   Posted: 12/09/2024 04:28:18

Because everything from front to back is in focus, some of the characters in the background mix with the foreground and therefore cause a distraction from the main subject. By selectively darkening the background as well as her circle of friends, she will be more visible as the centre of attention and the background will look less important.   Posted: 12/10/2024 11:09:11

Isaac - Besides their tiaras I also admired the dress code of the sandals! I like the idea ofJohann's edit. Here's a quick look with a radial filter dropping the exposure, highlights and whites on all but the birthday girl. B   Posted: 12/11/2024 17:58:45

Isaac--Such a fun group; the tiaras and sandals and big smiles tell the story of a group of friends celebrating. I really like the one woman on the left looking out of the frame for some contrast.   Posted: 12/19/2024 17:21:59

Great Photo. Agree with Kathleen assessment on the women on the left. I also agree with Bruce suggestion bringing the birthday girls on focus. Nice work.   Posted: 12/20/2024 02:10:54
