About the Image(s)
Taken while out on a hiking trek during our family Labor day weekend camping trip in Northern MN. This is Kawishiwi Falls, a set of falls after a dam used for electrical power. Had to use a mini tripod to steady the camera as my normal unfortunately got left at home by accident.

I hate when I forget my tripod :-) This is a lovely setting I can see why to took the photo. What kind of rocks is the water falling over? They look almost like lava from the photo.   Posted: 09/10/2023 17:05:14
It's a nice shot. I'm guessing from the light it was near mid-day as the light seems to be coming from overhead and seems pretty bright. If you had a chance to shoot it again, you might like the effect if you look for a time of day when the light is a bit more diffused. As for your shot, it looks to me like this scene contains two very different waterfalls: a bigger, faster-moving falls on the left and then, on the other side of the rock break, a smaller, split falls on the right, mostly somewhat slower-moving water, less dramatic drop. Have you thought about cropping in a bit and making 2 shots out of this instead of one? I suspect they might make a stronger visual impact that way as you would see more of what the water is doing. Looks like you got the shutter speed just right to catch the water in an interesting way. It does look like a pretty place.   Posted: 09/20/2023 14:51:56

Matt - let me begin by saying thanks again to you and the group for letting me join in. What appealed to me about the discussion groups was the comment, "If the image has won a medal or an HM, or even just accepted in an exhibition, it should not be presented for comment since we already know it has merit," so now I'll go back thru old unprocessed images and see if I can create a pleasing photo.
Matt, the power, or impact in this image is in the water rushing over the falls. And I thought you did a great job on the water at 1/15th second. I'm not familiar with the H & Y VND+CPL filter, but that explains the almost "glamour glow" type effect, especially noticeable in the trees and sky. To my eye, that filter renders the image a bit unrealistic, and I would be disinclined to enter into a landscape competition, however it does lend itself to a really nice artistic feel, so again, nice job.
See my VF, I think the image has more impact in a square crop, eliminating much of the canvas on the right. We read left to right and it's always a challenge when our subject is on the left-hand side of the frame because the viewer tends to go out of the frame as his or her eyes move right.

This is an interesting image of water flow at what seems to be mid-day. The impact of the flow of water looks quite intense. I like the way the line of the water leads my eye back to the the source. There is a nice beginning of change in color in the foliage on the trees signaling the changing of seasons.
I like Butch's square shot crop.
Nice image and capture of feeling.   Posted: 09/24/2023 14:30:07

I particularly like the strong colors; blue, green, brown, all accented by the roaring waterfalls. I'll also vote for the square crop that Butch produced. To me, the angles seem more appealing.   Posted: 09/25/2023 06:06:27
I'm sorry to be late in response, but enjoyed the image and the comments very much. I also like the square crop but find that the more vibrant colors are much missed, so I'd go with the original as favored!   Posted: 09/28/2023 10:17:11
