September 2023 - South Beach

About the Image(s)

Here is pure South Beach! Such exuberance! Miami is a great place for people watching and, not being particularly shy, they don’t mind being photographed.

I took this image with a Canon PowerShot G3X at 1/80, f/5.6, with an ISO of 160 at 200 mm.

The post production was minimal except for darkening the background using the new background selector on Lightroom.

Nice crisp and clear photo. One of the things I always try to do is look at what may cause distractions of the photo. Now there really could be a spike coming out of this person's hair but maybe it's something in the background. I would have liked to see a little more space around the subject.   Posted: 09/10/2023 18:31:25

This is a shot that just makes me smile. Excellent choice to shoot him in profile...I think head-on would have been less effective. This is a study of contrasting colors just crashing into each other, to great effect. As for improvements, I think I am talking about the same thing as Lori when I point out there looks like something light gray against a brown section of background that is right behind his pink hair about 1/4 of the way down the right side of the image. From the fact it is out of focus while the hair is very sharp I think it is in the background and my suggestion would be to try using a healing brush to get rid of it. There is also the matter of the part of his hand and finger nail in front of his face...unfortunately it is out of focus, although the nail is a bit of a tease in terms of what it looks like it is painted with, through the blur. If it were sharp, there would be no discussion about leaving it in. As it is, I would try cloning or healing it out and see if it helps or weakens the overall effect.   Posted: 09/20/2023 15:05:11

People watching, what a great way to spend a day on South Beach - haven't been there in years but you captured an interesting shot. And you certainly can't look away from this one - it has immediate impact and a degree of visual interest. However, you didn't state your goal in taking this shot so I'm assuming you just wanted an interesting photo, which this is.

That said, while interesting it's a bit lacking because profiles don't always make good portrait images, which is what this is. Big cities and especially places like South Beach are meccas for street photography and I would have loved to have seen this individual within the context of the South Beach milieu.

Technically the only issue I have is the distraction that's sticking out from his fingers below and to the left of his lips - you might want to eliminate that in some fashion
