Bee on Florida Sunflower by Carol Heffernan

November 2025 - Bee on Florida Sunflower

About the Image(s)

So last month we went for a 30 minute drive to Pepper Ranch, a county park, where they let Florida sunflowers grow wild. It's open only one weekend a year (and there hasn't been a good crop since before covid, so it was closed for 5+ years), so we were excited to get an entry time. I took out my camera bag, and my camera was missing. I had left it in my small bag from my last shoot! So all I had was my iPhone 16 pro max, while friends had their cameras. But, the best camera is the one you have, and I enjoyed being like 90% of the world, and shot with my phone. There were so many shots, but I liked the bee, so that is the one I chose here. I took all into Lightroom and cropped lots, did some sharpening, noise reduction, increased the blacks and shadows (to keep the center dark) and did some masking to get a bit more detail in bee and flower petals, and took the color a bit more yellow.
Not sure if the bee is in the best placement, or if he was sharp enough to crop in so close. Probably could have more detail in the petals. Suggestions welcome.
