Mime by Alec Chester

April 2025 - Mime

About the Image(s)

I took this photo some time ago of a mime in Helsinki. As I’ve mentioned before, I do love mimes, but they are disappearing. Definitely not a great job.

I liked the pink flower against all the gray.

I took this with a Canon Rebel camera at 1/100 sec, F/5.6, ISO 100 at 55 mm. I applied minor changes in Lightroom and, more recently, used Topaz AI for increased focus.

BTW: is anyone using the ProCamera app on their cell phones?

Interesting color on this one. I also like the pink against the gray. The photo is wonderfully sharp. I'm trying to figure out why is hand and ear are an orangish/red. I have shot a few street performers like this before. I would have liked to have seen his entire body with maybe an unsuspecting person as a secondary subject. I believe that would have told the entire story of the mime.   Posted: 04/08/2025 20:39:54

I agree with Lori's comments. It would have been interesting to see the whole person and who they were focused on. The orange red color on the ear and hand could probably be toned down.   Posted: 04/11/2025 15:08:39

I agree with Lori's comments as well. I love the idea of seeing people watching the mime. Color is good with the pink flower contrasting for attention of viewer.. Maybe the red in the ear is an ear plug of some kind?   Posted: 04/14/2025 23:43:11

Alec,
I like this one, and I'm going to respectfully disagree with the others about how you cropped this. I think the tight crop gives a better look at his unusual facial expression, and I think the pink flower is a great bit of contrast: given how the flower is saturated it practically explodes out of the photograph. I think the impact of the flower would be diminished a bit, perhaps quite a bit, by pulling back on the crop. The coloration on his hand is a little strange at first look, as the others said, but as I look at it again I like it...along with the pink flower you have two strong color anchor points in this mostly gray image. Very nice.   Posted: 04/20/2025 01:41:34
