Cook Out by Alec Chester

March 2025 - Cook Out

About the Image(s)

I’m away in Florida and all I have handy to send is this iPhone photo of a cook out.

The sticks are kindling to start the fires and double as marshmallow holders for smores, a delicious if not so healthy treat.

I modified the photo in Topaz Studio giving it the look of a painting.

Like we talked about before, people have different feelings about filters, but my friends who wouldn’t know an f stop from a bus stop always seem to prefer the filtered style.

Hi Alec, this is a new style for me and it looks like it's drawn some discussion previously. Couple of thoughts, how to add dimension to this picture and is there a subject? My eye is drawn to the sticks in the foreground but then I'm not sure to look next. I just noticed that there is a barn in the background, it would be fun to see it in a contrasting color, adding to the abstract effect of your picture.   Posted: 03/11/2025 17:02:03

Alec, I love the creativity of your image. So fun too. You have an eye for different things, which I wish I had. I thought te sticks were spaghetti in the table, glad to know it was sticks. I like the repeating pattern of them. I like the yellow in the background as a repeat as well. The red table cloths were a great complimentary color as well. I looked to see the background and like the barn faded in blue. Really enjoyed your image.   Posted: 03/12/2025 08:41:51

This is an interesting and creative image. I like you took the picture down the row of tables creating a nice "line". I like the reds on all the tables and the metal skewers or kindling on each one also creating a line. Unfortunately the barn just gets lost in the haze and background and I almost didn't know it was a barn. There is a lot going on in this image. This is a very creative picture.   Posted: 03/18/2025 15:43:06

I really like the color in this image. each color has a complimentary color. The repeating pattern of tables and sticks adds depth to the image as well. I am not bothered by the faded barn in the background but the smoke distracts me. Maybe a little dehaze would help. I do like the 'color block' or abstrat feel to his image.   Posted: 03/21/2025 22:34:03

Alec,
Great comment about folks not knowing the difference between an f-stop and a bus-stop!! And still we carry on! I have zero experience with filters like this, so I can't comment on the technical side. I find sometimes I like the effect, sometimes not. In this case, I think it works very nicely. I think the stuff in the background (barn, smoke, leaves, etc.) make it interesting. Nice shot.   Posted: 03/24/2025 19:48:11

this image caught my attention immediately. For some reason my crayon comic book eye loves it.   Posted: 03/26/2025 21:49:16
