About the Image(s)

This is a short-eared owl just after takeoff. It was shot at 200mm, f/9, 1/1250 sec., ISO 1600 about 20 minutes before sunset. It took its sweet time before it took off. I was sitting on the ground as SEOs are usually found on the ground. This was a patient and brave SEO as there were about 6 photographers in a group about 30 feet away from it and behind them, a farmer was 'haying' the marsh for silage. Not sure I said that correctly. What I am trying to get across, is that there was a lot going on and it took this SEO a long time prior to launching into its hunt for dinner.

This is magazine quality wonderful. You managed to capture the face and eye perfectly. Your DOF is spot on. It's cropped well. The only missing object is its dinner in the beak. Well done.   Posted: 02/11/2025 19:07:17

Lovely close shot of a SEO. They are fun to photgraph. I agree with Lori's comments. The focus on the wings and feathers is perfect and that can be challenging when they are in flight. Nice one!   Posted: 02/11/2025 21:22:00

This is a charming image of a SEO. The image is sharp and the face and eye is clear with great DOF. The inner wing on the right side has nice white color while the left side has nice brown color. The image is well composed/cropped. Nice!   Posted: 02/12/2025 19:35:04

Linnea, What an interesting owl. You got great focus and detail in the eyes and the feathers, a challenge for a bird in flight. It has space to fly into and a wonderfully blurred background so it really stands out. Super capture and edit (and patience).   Posted: 02/15/2025 22:37:29

Linnea, You really nailed this one! What I like most about it is the sharp eye which really cements the image. The blurry background is perfect. Very nice work!   Posted: 02/19/2025 12:22:26

Linnea, Very nice shot of a tricky subject. I agree with everyone else's comments about how well you did with depth of field and catching the bird's eye so clearly. I would add the lighting is very nice also...warm and soft, no doubt because you are close to sunset as you said. So nice job. I am puzzled as to why you included the original image as a second one. Is there something specific you want us to look at and compare the two?   Posted: 02/19/2025 16:43:01
