Spoonbill Hearts by Carol Heffernan

February 2025 - Spoonbill Hearts

About the Image(s)

Spoonbills are fun to find and after the rains in the summer, the beach often has pools of water they like to bathe in. I just liked this image and I think Happy Valentines Day when I look at it. No head, but the shape was what I liked. Didn't do much editing, just a touch of background color and some denoise and sharpening.

Carol, I like the simplicity of this composition. Bird pictures are one of my favs and this is definitely a different approach. You made the most of a rear view picture! I'm also a sucker for hearts, so you got me with the heart likeness. Great picture that evokes peacefulness.   Posted: 02/08/2025 16:33:07

Thanks, I just loved the reflection and sharpness of the feathers in contrast to the water.   Posted: 02/16/2025 00:37:13

I definitely heart this one. The fact that you have the reflection below makes it twice as wonderful. When your shooting birds you never know what you will find. This is different and perfect.   Posted: 02/11/2025 19:15:17

Glad you liked it. Different is exactly what I go for (at times).

This is a lovely image. The color is lovely and there is nice sharpness in the feathers. The composition is balanced and the reflection is amazing. Additionally, you have nice lighting hitting the feathers from the right side. Nice job!   Posted: 02/12/2025 18:52:09

Thanks, The spoonbills never pose, so you take what you get. I actually printed this for a show, hoping Valentines Day would make people enjoy it more.   Posted: 02/16/2025 00:39:09

Carol, This is just beautiful. I like it just the way it is, shaped like a heart with a beautiful pink color. Reflections are always fun and this one is perfect.   Posted: 02/19/2025 12:30:37

Carol, Just like Alec's horses, this one made me smile while I tried to figure out what I was looking at. At first I thought it was a single bird with its head under water until I noticed no neck is visible and its back is to the camera. The heart shape and the shade of pink in the flowers are perfect for valentine's day. It's too bad the reflection is a bit blurred, especially as you look closer to the bottom of the frame, but this is a tough thing to control for apart from taking a number of shots and hoping one of them is sharper without losing your composition. I don't see your technical details so I'm not sure if you could have done anything with a different shutter speed or aperture. That said, very nice composition.   Posted: 02/19/2025 17:07:35
