A Man and his Lama by Pauline Jaffe

February 2025 - A Man and his Lama

About the Image(s)

This month's image, " A Man and his Lama", was taken in Cusco, Peru at the beginning of last month, January 7, during a children's festival wrapping up the Christmas holidays. There were local bands marching down the streets of Cusco in addition to adults and children dressed in fanciful costumes who were marching with the bands. This gentleman let me take his picture and I love the interaction between him and his animal. I also liked the way he dressed the animal with the pom poms on the ears.

I took this image with my Nikon Z 62 i and 24-70 lens.
I did some basic editing and cropping in lightroom.

Please feel free to give me any feedback that would be helpful on this image. Thanks.

Hi Pauline, I love street phtography and in this case the lovely colors in his costume and the lama snuggling into his neck are delightful and make for a great picture. I did play around with your picture in Lightroom, using a radial filter to lighten the man and lama. I also took out the light spot in the left which distracted me from the subjects. There is a lot going on in your picture and I took a line of making the focus on the man and his animal. It's another view of a lovely picture.   Posted: 02/02/2025 22:55:36

Hi Sandra,
Thank you for your feedback.
I think what I might be tempted to do is to darken the background using the masking tool in Light Room. I would not want to lighten his face too much because his face was dark.   Posted: 02/02/2025 23:39:37

My neighbor whom I walk with every day is from Peru. I showed her this photo and it made her so happy. The man is perfect in his native attire and lama is an added bonus. The white blob in the upper left-hand corner and the reflection of white above the lama ears are in my opinion the only area that need adjusting. I don't find any other distraction. This would make a great travel photo in competition.   Posted: 02/11/2025 19:20:07

Pauline, What a great travel photo. I loved Cusco and all the wonderful people and local dress. This really is a fun street shot. I like the way Sandra edited it, with darkening the left side and lightening his face more, though I think his complexion should stay a bit darker. His costume is colorful and vivid and the llama makes it a great story.   Posted: 02/16/2025 00:25:21

Pauline, This one is really good! What an interesting place to visit. I agree with Sandra's edits as a net plus. I also used Topaz AI which has a face recovery feature. I thought that the AI version added a little bit by adding some clarity and smoothness to the face. The AI app is really amazing. Keep up your travels!   Posted: 02/19/2025 12:41:45

Pauline, This is a great shot. To me, the best bit of it is the interaction between the man and his Llama, the way the llama is nuzzling the man. If this was my shot, I would approach the editing process to emphasize that relationship. One way to do this is to separate the background from the man/llama by slightly darkening it and reducing contrast, maybe slightly reducing the saturation. This would make the man/llama pop out more. Sandra's edit does some of that, but I would play with background contrast and saturation. I tried to import into Capture One to show you, but the image as copied from the Group 55 page was too low in resolution for the AI mask to work well. Something to play with on your original full resolution shot. Secondly, I would put a small radial mask over the llama's left eye and very slightly brighten and recover shadows so you can see more detail in the eye. Otherwise, the colors in this are excellent, and I agree with you I would not try to lighten the man's face very much. Very nice shot.   Posted: 02/19/2025 17:40:18
