About the Image(s)

For this month's image, I created a composite using several files collected during my travels. I started with a photo of stone corridors and layered on top an image of an old church currently undergoing restoration. The rhino, the girl sculpture, and the hens??”originally photographed in Switzerland??”were placed into the scene to become the main characters. From there, I painted some shading on the rhino and the girl-hen, and added light and shadows throughout the composition.

To tie everything together, I applied two different textures: one using a color blend mode to harmonize the tones, and another in soft light to add texture and warmth. I finished the piece with a Camera Raw filter and some minor adjustments to balance the light, shadows, and vignette.

I hope the elements work well together, as I didn’t start with a specific story in mind. I'm happy to receive any suggestions for improvement??”or a title!

What a masterpiece, Maria. The stone corridor makes a great environment for the scene and you blended the characters in very well. The story of the bull and chicken girl is both fascinating and magical. Congratulations on creating one of the most creative images I have seen in a while.   Posted: 07/05/2025 21:08:33

I love this, Maria! I want to know these characters, to know their story. All of the elements of this image are so cohesive, not only in color, but in texture and in have segments themselves as well as being in an environment with segments (the stones and the shadows and light areas). The girl has such a whimsical attitude, and the rhinoceros looks inquisitive- their interaction really engages me.

I have just a couple of very minor suggestions as shown in the attached- the stone wall next to the rhino and the stone to the right of the girl's tail are a bit bright to my eye, so personally I would darken them.   Posted: 07/07/2025 22:32:44

Hi Peggy,
Thanks for your comment and suggestion. I agree with you about the luminosity in those areas, I had already darkened them from the original, but darkening a bit more does help to better focus attention on the rhino and the girl, and it enhances the image overall.

Maria, I love the golden subterranean world so! My first thought was that your enchanting half-woman-half-bird appears in a spin-off of the myth of the Harpies. She is very pretty and sweet but there is a certain coolness in her expression that makes me think that she may be capable of darker things, too. I think that Peggy´s darkening of the wall made the scene even more intense. - How about "Counsel" for a title? There is such a strong interaction between the bird-woman and the rhino that it is evident that they are discussing about something important.   Posted: 07/08/2025 08:11:19

Hi Kirsti,
Thank you for suggesting a title. I really enjoyed creating this image, but my mind went completely blank when it came to naming it. I'm glad you liked the scene!   Posted: 07/13/2025 19:24:44

Maria, I will join the others in my appreciation of your handling of this exquisite image. All the elements come together beautifully creating a complex and compelling image that draws the viewer back again and again. I like Kirsti's title and actually enjoyed it being "untitled" as it left me completely open to take it in. I have no suggestions as this feels perfect as is.   Posted: 07/12/2025 21:16:25

Hi Brad,
Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it. I'm glad the scene creates a sense of tension that encourages the viewer to explore further and ask questions about what might be happening there.
