About the Image(s)

I enjoy street photography but it’s always difficult to get all the elements in the right place at the right time. With compositing, you can make a story, which is what I did with this series of images all taken in the same Gothic district of Barcelona last year. I really liked the Story cafe backdrop but needed something interesting to put in front of the entrance. Down the block, this man was eating gelato on the sidewalk and next door was another restaurant with these floating lights that helped fill in the blank space of the entryway.

I cut out the man eating ice cream, matched the exposure with a Curves adjustment and placed him in front of the Story Cafe background. Similarly, I placed the floating lights in the cafe using a Lighten adjustment to isolate the lights themselves. I used Selective Color to emphasize some of the elements and then classic radial gradients to add shading and light in various places, including a vignette.

Hi Matt, you have created an enchanted corner where the name of the cafe gets a deeper meaning, with those magical glowing golden lights. I love the deep colors and the way the warm light falls on the pavement, and the red ribbon on the man's hat is a perfect final touch. - My only question is if you need the white menu stand on the right - it does balance for the man's white coat, but I feel that it may dilute the strength of the triangle composition formed by the man, the billboard and the window?   Posted: 02/10/2025 19:23:30

Thank you Kirsti for the suggestion of removing the right menu. I agree it is a better image, and solidifies the triangle effect, without that distraction.   Posted: 02/11/2025 16:19:21

Street photography is difficult and time consuming so why not create your own. If I had seen this photo in a series about street photography, I would not have thought that it was a composite. The lighting is consistent throughout which is essential to successful composite. This is good work. I took the liberty of applying Kirsti's suggestion about the white menu on the right and cropped a little while I was there. Crop is the word judges use most when judging my camera club's competitions. I've been convinced.   Posted: 02/10/2025 20:26:22

Appreciate your edit without the right menu, Alan. It does help the image and keeps the focus on the main elements. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 02/11/2025 16:20:24

Love - it! Agree with Kirsti and Alan the menu board is not needed, doesnt add anything and is distracting due the colour.
You handled the the composition and the placement of the subject perfectly along with accomodating the light patterns of the background right down to the foreground which is dark and hides the join of the feet to the ground.
As the subject is brighter than the bright bits in the background this all makes for a great image. The title is also perfect and invites the reader to look into the image.
Only thing that would have been better would have been catching him face on, but as you say everything in street photography is a grab shot and you have to go with what you get. Wonderful work.   Posted: 02/11/2025 13:48:29

Hi Bruce, Yes, it's true that getting a front face is always better than the back or side in this case. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 02/11/2025 16:21:31

What a great moment you've created here, Matt! I especially like the name of the cafe, because you are definitely telling a story here. The colorful lights fit right in with the "Story" above them, as well as mimicking the dancing words on the colorful menu chalkboard. It feels as if you changed the perspective a bit on the man, as if you were a step to the right; it looks great. I love where the light is falling and where you've introduced shadows. Well done!   Posted: 02/11/2025 17:04:41

Matt, Nicely done. I agree you've effectively simulated reality here. I join you this month in attempting the same, I even used reality as my title. I'm looking forward to seeing how you take images to the next level.   Posted: 02/15/2025 05:08:34

Hi Matt, when I was living in Sydney, I loved grabbing my camera and venturing into the streets to capture some street shots. I agree that it's difficult to get all the elements to work together.

With this composition, you've created a scene that immediately captures our attention-the lights in the doorway, the board, and the man perfectly positioned, all enhanced by the consistency of light throughout the scene. Everything is working well, as all the elements belong to the same scene and story.   Posted: 02/21/2025 18:03:46
