About the Image(s)
With my Canon R5 & macro lens i was walking round a garden in Cape Town and noticed this bee enjoying this beautiful rose.
1/160 F7.1 ISO400
In post i just moved the B&W sliders in Lightroom and adjusted the Clarity & Dehaze to darken the background a bit then just cropped in slightly.

I love this. The white rose pops forth from the dark bokeh background, and the bee is a bonus for those study the image. That bee is in polin heaven. I especially like the pale yellow that radiates from the inner petals. The polin on the bee's back and the petal veins are all in focus. This image is ready for a lucky wall.   Posted: 04/04/2026 17:19:33

Nice image. My initial impression when I first looked at the image was that the whites looked a bit dull and I thought puttng the bee off center would be more dynamic. I placed with it, boosting the whites and adding some sharpness in the center, descreasing sharpeness outside the center and increasing the vibrance. I could have played with many alternative crops to see which I liked best but just wanted to give you one to look at and consider.   Posted: 04/07/2026 14:31:18
Thanks Mike i like your version as it does look more dynamic and the bee and the yellow stamens stand out more. Thanks for taking the time to show me an alternative :)

Alley, My first look at this image it was hard to find a bee in the center of the stamen and felt the colors needed to be redirected to highlight the bee better. I do like how Mike was able to better clarify the bee. I also feel his cropping and color fixes have some great merit but of course those options are up to the maker and what they want people to see in the image.   Posted: 04/10/2026 20:49:27
Thanks Tom and after looking at it again i do see that the bee and the stamens need more colour to make them stand out. Always good to have another viewpoint.   Posted: 04/15/2026 19:34:48
Honey bees collecting pollen are a great subject matter. If you have the pixels to work with, the tighter, off-center crop that Mike suggested is very enjoyable. I wonder what the bee in a horizontal (moving left to right) rather than moving upward would look like? This is a lovely image for the spring season.   Posted: 04/11/2026 17:55:44
Thanks Polly and i will revisit to see what your suggestion would like. Yes think we are ready for spring now in Colorado!   Posted: 04/15/2026 19:36:40
As an avid pollinator garden I really enjoy looking at this image. For me the bee is the story and I feel it does not quite pop enough. You might try to brighten the bee and selectively sharpen it. I think Mike's crop does make the image a little more interesting due to the classical soft focus on the outer edges of the Camelia.   Posted: 04/12/2026 13:32:36
Thanks Sharon appreciate your thoughts and think you are right i need to make the bee pop more so will revisit.   Posted: 04/15/2026 19:37:28
Good eye to see this busy bee and capturing it. My first impression was the center is too dark. On a second look it seems to me the center with the bee and the outer/back petals are sharp but the closer petals are soft. All a problem with depth of field. I like Mike's edit as it makes the bee and stamens pop and leaves the soft petals as sort of a vignette around the main subject. Really worth more editing and playing with different edits.   Posted: 04/12/2026 21:07:01
Thanks Pamela and will be revisiting the editing as i think i have more work to do on this one.   Posted: 04/15/2026 19:38:40
