This image was taken in January at Ridgefield NWR in southern WA. Occasionally some sandhill cranes stop over at Ridgefield for a short time to rest and eat. I don't call myself a bird photographer, especially birds in flight. I frequently try to get sharp flight images but usually not very successful. I was very pleased to get these three cranes in flight with nice wing positions and pretty sharp. Shot with my Sony 7RMV and Sony 200-600mm lens at 433mm. ISO 400, at 1/2000sec and f/6.3 with +1EV. Post processed in ON1 RAW 2025, cropped, I masked the cranes and added dynamic contrast and sharpening.
A slight vignette was added.

I too am trying to capture birds in flight and I know how difficult it can be. You nailed these guys. I like the simplicity, symmetry and balance of the image. The two soaring birds on the right are well balanced by the active flapping of the bird on the left. I find it amazing that all three birds are sharp at f/6.3. Does the sony have eye tracking? What is "+ IEV"?   Posted: 05/10/2025 14:28:14

Yes the Sony R5 has eye tracking. The + 1 EV means that I set my exposure compensation to +1 to give a little more exposure.   Posted: 05/12/2025 00:34:13
