About the Image(s)

In the mangrove at the South Padre Island Birding Center I found several Green heron nests. Most of them were too obstructed by foliage to provide a clear shot, but this one was fairly open and the birds were active. I caught them "in the act" then the next day found they had produced an egg. Over the course of the next few days, they eventually had four eggs, but this was the best pose of the many, many images I captured. It was an overcast day and I used Auto ISO which resulted in ISO 12,800. I was surprised at how well Topaz-DeNoise cleaned it up.
Canon R5; Canon 100-500mm lens with 1.4X teleconverter; handheld; f.10, 1/4000 sec. I did not need that fast of a shutter speed, but I was set up for catching the male flying in and out and did not stop to change it - so that accounts for the very high ISO.
I cropped and did global adjustments in LR. I did a little dodge and burn in PS. In Color EFex 7 I added polarization and PRo contrast, with a littel tweak of dynamic contrast.
I want this image eligible for Nature Division, so of course no cloning and no vignette is permitted. Any other suggestions you have that do not violate the Nature defintion will be welcome.

The story and composition are strong. Your persistence in finding a shot with an egg paid off. My attention goes right to those bright and watchful eyes, and then follows the downward-pointing beak to the elusive egg. The eyes and egg form a compositional bonus triangle. The clarity and sharpness of the birds in the original look stronger in the original. The image is both wall and competition worthy. Good luch in competition!   Posted: 05/10/2025 13:40:29
