About the Image(s)

This Image was taken two weeks ago at St Augustine Alligator Farm Rookery. Hundreds of birds nest there yearly with up to 7 or 8 different species occupying the grounds and often the same trees. I found this Great White's nest interesting as there were two newly hatched chicks and an egg that hatched overnight. The parent was feeding the two new hatchlings with a fish that was way too big. I was shooting into a shaded area and the parent's shading of the chicks.
Not much processing on this image. I adjusted a few sliders in RAW, lightly burned some of the light fluff, and dodged the fish being fed to the chicks and added a tight crop.

Canon R5, f/8, 1/1600 sec, ISO 1250 and shot at 500mm.

Great story and composition here, and the birds are all very sharp. My attention is initially drawn to the parent's eye, then down the beak to the hatchlings and finally to the egg. I would loosen the crop to include more of the parent's neck. If this is not for competition I would darken the background. Where was the nest with respect to your camera?   Posted: 05/10/2025 14:40:34
