January 2025 - Perfectly Perched

About the Image(s)

On our recent trip to the Serengeti we wanted to see a variety of the birds that inhabit the area so on our game drive one morning this was our focus. We had
Barely left camp and already had seen 30 different species! This one I think was a Rattling Cisticola (there are many different species of Cisticola which we saw.

Shot with my Canon R5 100mm-400mm lens 1/125 F5.6 ISO500.

Very little in post apart from darkening the background and adding a vignette.

To me this is a nice sharp portrait of the bird (some type of sparrow?) The eye looks sharp to me an has a tiny catch light. Your choice of aperture allows the subject to be in focus with just a tiny bit of fall-off in the grass around it and a very nice bokeh on the background. In my opinion this is the perfect depth of field for wildlife. Well done.   Posted: 01/12/2025 15:22:37

Kudo's to you for looking for and capturing the often overlooked birds when on safari in a big game park. I think you did an excellent job in capturing this bird. Everything looks nice and sharp. There is a sense of the environment without distracting elements. Some would suggest to flip the image so the bird is looking to the right because that is the way we read, left to right, but I feel it is a matter of preference. Well done.   Posted: 01/12/2025 21:21:06

I too enjoy this image. Did you photograph it in the morning? It almost looks like he's trying to warm up. I think that the color balance you have between the background and the bird is just right (not too bright not too dark). Wonderful image.   Posted: 01/15/2025 19:51:35
