About the Image(s)

This image was taken May 2019 during a spring trip to Yellowstone National Park. At that time I was shooting with a Canon EOS 6D DSLR. Lens was a Sigma 150-600mm, ISO 3200, at 1/125 sec, at f/20 and I was using a tripod. (Today I would probably use different settings.) I was using ON1 for post processing. As you can see from the original I had to do some cropping. It's always hard to isolate subjects when they are herd animals. I'm not sure what my other processing steps were.

Sweet lovable image. I thought the entire image could use a bit of vibrance and contrast and wanted to see how it would look with a crop that just included the area of most interest. I'm a bit bothered by the hind legs of the mother being cut off the way they are and I don't think they add interest. See what you think of this more extreme crop. I added some vibrance and contrast as well.   Posted: 12/08/2024 16:54:20

Thanks Mike. I had not thought about cropping tighter. I do like the more intimate feel of your crop. I do think I would like to keep the mom's horns in so will try a new crop.   Posted: 12/13/2024 00:41:57

Wonderful capture of a behavior. Seeing the mother's tongue licking the calf is perfect, and you also have catchlight. I agree that a tighter crop is better, but consider including the mother's whole head and some neck. I really like this image, well done.   Posted: 12/14/2024 18:09:06

WONDERFUL!! You captured an intimate and tender moment. The detail is marvelous. I love the horn and arc of fur in your crop. Seeing the legs emphasizes the huge size of the head. I like Mike's addition of vibrance and contrast. This image is definitely wall worthy.   Posted: 12/15/2024 01:47:33

What a wonderful image, Mother's love simply can't be beaten. I try to not read the comments from others first, but in this case I did, and have to agree with Mike the mother's back legs seem to add nothing to the overall image and so I liked his rather extreme crop. But of course it is subjective, and what the photographer likes. However it is fun to experiment.

What a tender scene! Even before reading the comments I had the same thought as Mike. I like the image cropped in closer much better because, as you say, it feels more intimate. I just learned anew trick to add "pop" - you might want to try it. In PS make a new adjustmetn layer and choose Vibrance. Run both sliders ll the way to the right (it will look terribe at this point). Choose Blendig Mode Screena and reduce the opacity to suit your taste. I have been using this a bit and like the results I am getting. Good luck.   Posted: 12/16/2024 14:30:27

Very endearing image and a great nature story. Lovely detail in the fur, eyes and tongue. I am not bothered by the hind legs as my eye goes straight to the mother's head licking the calf. I perhaps would have darkened the backround a bit. All subjective as the others have commented. Very nice capture well done.   Posted: 12/17/2024 21:56:27
