About the Image(s)

This image was made earlier this year but just recently processed. It is a 25 sec exposure. Canon R5; Canon rf24-105 lens with a 10 stop neutral density filter. Tripod mounted.
I cropped then ran Topaz DeNoise. In PS I used the remove tool to eliminate the smaller piece of driftwood. Sometimes the remove tool does not do a very thorough job, and a little piece was left. I thought it added interest so did not do any further removal. I used the Tone Curve to adjust the whole image, made a new layer and selectively dodged and burned. On another layer I adjusted hue and saturation. I used the brush tool to remove the blueish cast on the sand in the foreground. Finally I added vibance. In Color Efex I applied polarization and Pro Contrast then added a slight vignette.

I love your processing of this excellent composition. My suggestion would be work on the bright area just above the rock. I might try using the cloning tool set to color and bring in some of the surrounding color into the brightest areas to tone it down.

I'm not sure if I would do this next suggestion but would at least see how it looks. The wave that is just under the horizon gives me the impression that the horizon is not level. The image might be stronger without it.

Same goes for a different crop. Maybe see how it looks in a landscape orientation by cropping the top down to just above the rock.

Mike, thanks for helping me solve that horizon issue. I also think it appears to be off, but I have checked it over and over and found that it is straight. Your observation about the line of the wave explains it. I will follow up on your other suggestons as well.   Posted: 12/08/2024 15:40:07

This is a lovely photograph. I love the way you brought out the barnacles on the rock, great texture. I also enjoy the pastel color palette. The whitish area above the rock has a nice V pattern pointing towards the image center. You might consider enhancing this a bit, I think it gives nice movement to the image. The horizon looks perfect to me. The wave also provides movement in the image. I am on the fence about the little piece of driftwood in the foreground, does it take away from the rock and its shadow?   Posted: 12/14/2024 17:59:36

Thanks, Polly. i too am on the fence about that little bit of driftwood in the front. I may make a duplicate and take it out so I can compare. I have worked a bit more on that bright area as well. All these suggestions are really helpful to me.   Posted: 12/16/2024 14:21:24

The textures in the driftwood pieces are wonderful. I also see interesting textures and colors in the water. I would try to enhance them. The wave below the horizon doesn't bother me, in fact I find it interesting. I like the small piece of driftwood in the foreground; it has interesting textures and lines. The original image also grabbed my attention. I would crop the image from the left a bit, just to remove the small branches top left and the left side of the large driftwood piece on the left. The remaining pieces then lie on a pleasing diagonal. I would also lower the highlights on the top, and add vibrancy to bring out the water colors. I think you have two great images here.   Posted: 12/15/2024 01:33:02

The beautiful colors of this image is so soothing, and I like the contrast in the texture of the rock, I confess at first I thought the horizen was off, but realized it was the position of the wave that gave that impression. I learned that some time ago when photographing sunrise over the ocean, and being told by my husband that the ocean does not run down hill. We did figure out it was the wave coming in at an angle that made it so. I do find the piece of driftwood a little distracting. but perhaps not enough to warrent removal. A great image

Happy Hpidays to you as well, Ann. I have mixed feeling about that little peiece of driftwood in the front, so I will experiment with it and see what I think. I did some work around the horizon and to me it does register as straight now. Thanks for your helpful comments.   Posted: 12/16/2024 14:24:06

You had great colour to use for the sunrise and your processing enhanced this further. Conjures up a dreamy quality in this image to me. I really like how you have positioned the driftwood adding interest to smoothness of the water. It has an artistic feel. The horizon does not bother me. I like the image the way it is for me.   Posted: 12/17/2024 22:06:52
