ARTOCARPUS by Stewart Savage

July 2024 - ARTOCARPUS

About the Image(s)

Found this tree at the Anihau Triangle Park which is part of the Ft. DeRussy Armed Forces Recreation Center in Waikiki, HI. Although there are many trees at this park, I found this one particularly fascinating. All of the leaves were grouped around the flowers/fruits which created a number of leading lines to the center. I believe it is an Artocarpus Nitidus. However, there are a number of tropical trees that look similar.

I cropped the top portion of the image to remove a light section on the upper left and a dark section on the upper right that were both distraction. Did some retouching on the leaves to remove bugs and bird droppings. Added some contrast and increased the saturation a bit to give it a more robust green tone.

This is a fantastic clear Photograph. I love taking similar photos of foliage. You are spot on with this one.   Posted: 07/04/2024 18:20:19

Well done. I like the depth of field and the leading lines.   Posted: 07/05/2024 20:19:05

The leading lines were what caught my attention. It was as if the tree was shouting "Hey, look at me!" as we walked by.   Posted: 07/09/2024 18:40:23

Stewart, very good! The vein pattern on the leaves and the details in the fruit are excellent. The lighting is very good. I'm imagining there was some cloud cover or at least no direct sun on the subject...?? Very good!   Posted: 07/06/2024 21:21:50

I too am pleased with the amount of detail in this image. The lighting was perfect for photography. It was mid morning and the clouds were coming in and getting ready for rain. Was able to get a few good photographs in before the rain came down. Then it was a battle between getting some good shots and keeping the camera dry.   Posted: 07/09/2024 18:32:51

Stewart, sorry for the tardy reply to your reply! Yes, threat of rain can work very well to the advantage of a photographer. I have a small umbrella that I frequently have on hand to protect my gear. It's too small to do much for me...   Posted: 07/28/2024 00:02:14

First and foremost Stewart, WELCOME TO OUR GROUP. It is a friendly group with excellent photographers. Like this image a lot. We use to live in the north-east and we would find something similar called osage oranges. They looked identical. Perfectly cropped, great color, sharpness and definition. Like the way the fruit is offset in the upper half.   Posted: 07/07/2024 12:47:02

Thanks. Glad to be a part of this group. I was lucky with this image. I have a tendency to shoot really tight on the subject. This time I had a bit of wiggle room when cropping.   Posted: 07/09/2024 18:36:41

This is a lovely image. I popped up the vibrance of the subject just a bit and then decided to play. (Hope you don't mind) I'm not even sure if I like my result as much as yours but I'd be interested to hear everyone's comments.   Posted: 07/27/2024 20:59:34
