DISTANT HORIZONS by Tom Buckard

July 2024 - DISTANT HORIZONS

About the Image(s)

Not being a fan of high key images, I figured I would try one. This image was taken from a boat in the ocean off Key West. Image is of the Schooner America heading West into the sun around three in the afternoon. Please let me know your thoughts on this image.

Shot with a Nikon D800 in manual mode with a Nikkor 80-400 lens, exposure at 1/200 of a second, F/7.1, focal length 330mm. Crop, haze removal and very little PS.

It is very unusual heading into all that white! Your boat is very clear and crisp. I tried to work on it in Lightroom and could not improve at all!
great job!   Posted: 07/04/2024 18:18:11

I would try to get a bit more detail from the highlights in the bow of the boat and the water. I do like how the boat is sailing into a pure white sky. The quasi-ghostly crew and the translucent American flag are nice features.   Posted: 07/05/2024 18:27:46

Nice one! I agree with Stewart about the front of the boat. I use Lightroom and would start by taking the shadows to 100%, the white also and the clarity as well. Then, bring them back down until you get the high key feel you want. Keep at it.   Posted: 07/05/2024 20:23:38

Tom, excellent idea. I like the subject. I agree with the comments above. I think having some more detail on the front of the ship would be good. The detail in the sails are good. Nice looking ship!   Posted: 07/06/2024 21:27:28

Thank you everyone for your comments. Original image was just so blown out I could barely see the bow and bowsprit of the schooner. I faked it and not very good I might add. Still not a fan of High Key so am going to hit the delete key most likely.   Posted: 07/08/2024 12:55:54

Before you delete, throw it into Photoshop and play with some of the filters. You can add a nice "painterly" effect to the image. You might find something that you like.   Posted: 07/09/2024 18:51:57

Tom, this does look better. I've had little success with high-key myself.   Posted: 07/28/2024 00:04:33

I'm not a fan of hi key either, but you two fellows make it worth investigating.   Posted: 07/27/2024 21:01:24
