GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NAT'L PARK by Richard Distlerath

May 2025 - GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NAT'L PARK

About the Image(s)

This image was captured in Gatlinburg TN just inside the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
My OM1 Mark 2 has a computational ND filter which I set at 4 stops. The lens was the 12-40mm f2.8 II set at 21mm. Camera settings were 1.6 sec, f6.3 and iso 800. I stitched together 5 photos to capture a bit more detail.
I have not done this kind of image and welcome suggestions on how to make the image more impactful. The image has been lightly processed in LR reducing highlights and whites as well as lifting the blacks a bit.

Richard, first of all this is an impactful image. The water silky water and lush green background create a very calming scene. I do think there may be a use for a third element in the scene. The water is one, the foliage is two... My minds eye wants a fly fisherman in the scene or some critter on the opposite bank.
Something I would do is crop up some. I think there is a little too much water in the bottom of the frame.   Posted: 05/02/2025 21:33:11

Yep, we are on the same track. I had been playing with cropping. The fly fisherman came later in the day! It needs someting for more impact. Thank you!

Richard, this is a tranquil very realistic image due to your masterly use of the built in ND filters in the OM1 system. Have spent a lot of time on the Shenandoah and in the Smokies so this is my kind of image. Everyone has their opinions, so I actually like the foreground rapids because it makes you feel like you are in the water. I tried putting several stock fly fisherman into your image and none looked real. To me this image has no distracting elements in the frame and is a true landscape image. I wish other camera manufacturers would do the internal computerized ND filters. I have a bunch of these lens mounted ND filters and because of inconvenience they are highly under used.   Posted: 05/04/2025 13:55:45

Thank you! I used a pocket tripod and a few different internal ND filters. My intention was to get so low as to be in the water.
