March 2025 - JOHNNY REB

About the Image(s)

A week ago there was a huge Civil War Battle of Olustee reenactment, held every year in Olustee, Florida. It is an amazing event with 2500 reenactors, an encampment, many canon and several very realistic battles. If you enjoy shooting people dressed to the period. You would very much enjoy this.

Here is the link to the story of the real battle.

Tom - Really good shot. The image conveys a story. The man really looks the part. Sharp subject and a nicely soft background. We do have folks swing by this way for various period reenactments from the 1800's. I need to get off my duff and take advantage of these photographic opportunities...   Posted: 03/05/2025 20:11:53

Don, it is definitely a good idea to check out some of these reenactments. They take it very seriously and most play their part to the nth degree. Many great character shots.   Posted: 03/06/2025 17:17:24

This is a very nice portrait. I like the uncluttered background behind the head of the soldier. The side/back lighting is very good yet does not create any shadows on the face. The light on the bent arm leads the viewer's eyes to the face. You may wish to mask the iris/pupil and increase exposure by 2/3rds stop and decrease highlights to remove the glow. This will pop the eyes. This man looks the part! The battle was gruesome.   Posted: 03/10/2025 23:49:22

Richard , will definitely take your suggestion and work on the eyes. Eyes are so important and I didn't really like the way his eyes turned out. Thank you.   Posted: 03/11/2025 08:04:52

It looks like he has a cigarette in his right hand. I would have asked him to put that in his mouth and grab his hat and have his hat hanging from his hand. That way you can see the emblem of the hat.

Otherwise, great photo. I like the pose, The camera angle, and the relationship between the background and the subject. Well done.   Posted: 03/21/2025 01:37:47
