July 2021 - I stepped in a Bunch of Flowers

About the Image(s)

Corvid and restrictions gave me an opportunity to experiment more with still life. I have always dabbled in that arena but with having nothing to do but stay home I got to experiment more with lighting. For this shot I took my boots and set them up with artificial flowers inside one of the boots. I placed the heel of that boot on a little plastic riser. I placed lights all around, including the bottom so that the shadows would not be heavy against the white backdrop. I used my Canon EOS R5; 24070 mm lens; FL 34.00mm; 1/40 sec; f45; ISO100. It took me several tries to get exactly what I wanted. I wanted a soft shadow under the boots but no shadows in back of the flowers. I did want a softer look behind the flowers on the backdrop for it to not look too stark white. I used PhotoShop for post processing. I am still experimenting and still loving still life.

Hi Heather! I liked what you did, it's different. My only suggestion would be to remove that little branch sticking up from the center of the flower. My other suggestion, is to change the color of the border. My eye goes to the flower and boot and then to the border (color). I removed the little stick and went to a narrow (3pix) White border. This is what I came up with.   Posted: 07/06/2021 14:57:39

It looks like we are becoming the Canon R5/6 group. It sounds like it was a lot of work to make this, but it was worth the effort. I, too, would remove that little branch. Otherwise, I prefer it as it is.   Posted: 07/11/2021 14:54:37

Your still life is very creative as Sarita mentioned. The colors are pleasing and I think the type of flowers go well with the style of boots. I agree with Stuart to change the border. It was a bit distracting. Removing the stick is a good idea as well. A different approach would be to have more of an environment for the still life. Perhaps sitting on some stairs or in front of a porch etc. This would provide more depth of field. For me, I feel like the boot with the flowers is floating. However, I like it this way too.   Posted: 07/11/2021 18:11:48

I agree with the other comments. To me it looks like one boot is on top of the other boot. I would place both boots on the same surface. I wonder what it would look like with flowers in both boots. A border the same color as the boots might work. This is an innovative composition.   Posted: 07/30/2021 01:33:06
