Ligier on Turn #6 by Charles Bartolotta

October 2026 - Ligier on Turn #6

About the Image(s)

I shot this image two weeks ago at the Watkins Glen Vintage Car Races. I don’t know why the call it a vintage car race since many of the cars racing are late model Camaros, Mustangs, and Porsches in addition to some actual vintage racers. I’ve been attending this weekend event for the last 10 years with my two sons and my grandson. We have a pop-up camper which is not the most comfortable thing to sleep in, I wouldn’t pass up this opportunity to spend a weekend with my two sons and my grandson for anything.
I shot the image with my Nikon Z8 and a Sigma 150-600 mm lens. The focal length of the lens was at 600 mm, the ISO was 250. I used shutter priority set at 1/800 sec and f/7.1. The image was hand-held. (I’ve given my grandson (he turns 17 soon) my old -Nikon D700 and a Nikon 70-300 to use. He did quite well with it.) I like shooting from this position on the track because you’re slightly elevated and the cars are slowing down as they go through the turn.
I processed the image primarily in Camera RAW and Photoshop. It took a little cropping and saturation adjustments. I also removed a large spectral highlight from each of the headlight covers.

Charles - I bet your grandson had a blast at the track. Wow 1/800 of a second to capture this race care with clarity. Great job.   Posted: 10/01/2026 17:53:58

Thanks, Sharlana. They go a bit slower through the turns, so 1/800 works well.   Posted: 10/01/2026 21:05:55

It is a great photo of the car. For me the only drawback is it appears parked.   Posted: 10/01/2026 18:06:19

Thanks, Michael. Maybe I'll work on a linear blur of the backgound.   Posted: 10/01/2026 21:07:22

Charles, I see two options with this image. One a slow shutter speed and a lot of blur or your option, a fast shutter speed and a sharp and detailed image. I lean towards your choice and think this is a super image perfectly cropped, good visual impact and interest. Shot on the curve was an excellent choice.   Posted: 10/04/2026 14:10:27
